Photographer, Ian M. Kummer, is a military photojournalist and an art student at the Art Institute of Sacramento

FETFAN: How did you get started in the industry and for how long have you been in?

Ian: In 2011 I was deployed to Afghanistan and I saw military photographers in action, and envied them. I thought that was really cool! In 2012, I signed up as a photographer myself and started art school, and I've been shooting night and day ever since.

FETFAN: Your choice of genre is definitely out of the box, how did you decide or how did you discover this side of you as an artist?

Ian: When I started my job and education as a photojournalist, my creative and unconventional side just kind of came out. Someone handed me a DSLR camera and told me to go practice. I've worked with a wide range of creative models, including that one special person who went on to become my wife.

FETFAN: Throughout your modeling I'm sure you have been to many different places, which has been your favorite and what kind of project were you working on?

Ian: One time I was hired by a digital artist to capture 100 photographs of a nude model in "mermaid poses". We worked out the various props she would interact with via email, and I went out with my wife - my model of choice! - and shot the photos in a studio. They came out great, and the artwork my client produced from them was wonderful!

Model: Mia Sollis-Lynette

FETFAN: Is there anyone who has inspired your work?

Ian: I love Stephen Hicks. He has a way of capturing any model he works with in any setting and make them look gorgeous. Hicks has a very unique style, and his photos are almost always identifiable as his. I can see a photo of a woman and say "That was taken by Stephen Hicks."

I think that is one of the most important qualities any artist can have, is a unique style that isn't lost even as the artist grows and develops his technique.

FETFAN: When at a photo shoot, what do you love most about the experience and what do you find challenging as an artist?

Ian: I love meeting new people and learning a little bit about their personality and life experience - and together creating a work of art.

The most challenging part is overcoming my shyness. That might sound odd, but even today I consciously feel a bit nervous when interacting with new people and surroundings. I just have to hide it and try my best to act confident!

FETFAN: How would you best describe yourself using just 3 words?

Ian: Outside the box
