Photographer/model Cyanide Mishka

Cyanide Mishka: Photography for me is just a playground, one dreamworld I had to create. Each image is a different story and an inner contradiction. Just like in dreams the lines easily blur. Innocence turns into sin, pain becomes pleasure, darkness emerges into light. Dreams are not always easy and enjoyable either, they could turn nightmares in a flash. It doesn't matter to me as long as I'm able to transmit the sensation and hopefully give you a taste of what I felt.

FETFAN: How did you get started with Photography and how long have you been a photographer for?

Cyanide Mishka: At very early age I found an old Soviet camera at home and it was fascinating to me. I was taking pictures of anything that caught my eye. However, my self-portraits started when I was 18. It just happened spontaneously but severe addiction developed since.

FETFAN: What type of camera do you shoot with?

Cyanide Mishka: Mostly with Canon.

FETFAN: If you had to choose one lens to work with which one would it be and why?

Cyanide Mishka: My most used, most loved and trusted 35mm f2. It just works great for self-portraits. Very versatile but still perfect for small spaces.

FETFAN: What lighting equipment do you take on a shoot?

Cyanide Mishka: None, chasing light is part of the fun. The satisfaction when you get that perfect natural light and the angle which it hits doesn't compare to anything.

FETFAN: Your photography stands out from many artists, how did you decide or discover this side of yourself as an artist?

Cyanide Mishka: My photos are representation of my mind. I've always had unusual interests and finding a way to accept them was liberating. Combining art and soul exhibitionism.

FETFN: How much post production do you do on your images?

Cyanide Mishka: I like to keep the pictures raw yet at the same time polished. Not much post production happens, mainly color and light adjustments.

FETFAN: What software do you use for editing your images?

Cyanide Mishka: Adobe Photoshop.

FETFAN: What inspires you to create such great imagery?

Cyanide Mishka: Everything. Everything that happens to me, everything that has happened already and everything I wish would happen. Music and books are an endless inspiration. All the amazing known and unknown artists out there leave me in awe of how much talent and beauty there is in the world and that gives me energy to create.

FETFAN: What is your favorite image you have recently created and can you give us an insight on its creation?

Cyanide Mishka: The truth is that I hate all my images equally. But my favorite most recent "shoot" happened few days ago, I woke up and it was cloudy, rainy yet the sun was trying to peek through. I spontaneously started taking pictures and the light was just so magical. It showed more beautiful on camera than in real life which is something that rarely happens.

FETFAN: Throughout your career I'm sure you have been to many different places, which has left an impression and what kind of project were you working on?

Cyanide Mishka: I don't have a career in photography but I've taken my camera with me on every journey. I loved shooting in this lovely typical old-school dutch house in Utrecht. The atmosphere was slightly creepy, pretty and perfect for my dollhouse series.

FETFAN: What talent would you like most to have?

Cyanide Mishka: Not a talent but cloning myself would be really useful.

FETFAN: What is something you're still learning?

Cyanide Mishka: Film photography and movie making. But really, maybe I'm just still learning how to use a camera. When you're completely self-taught, the learning is constant.

FETFAN: What is something you consider to be overrated?

Cyanide Mishka: Humans? Pop culture, glam photographers, arugula, Paris (sorry), etc, etc. Basically almost everything is overrated in my book.

FETFAN: Is there anyone who has inspired your work?

Cyanide Mishka: Just like I said before, so many different people inspire me. From Francesca Woodman, Anton Corbijn, Sally Mann to David Lynch and Aaaron Hawks. Trevor Brown's twisted imagination and Laura Makabresku's beautiful pain. Tons of artists.

FETFAN: When at a photo shoot, what do you love most about the experience and what do you find challenging as an artist?

Cyanide Mishka: As a self-portraitist, there are many challenges but I love the struggle. Once you get to that ideal balance between having your mind behind the camera and making your body speak in front of it - my favorite moment. From then on I just go with the flow.

FETFAN: Have you ever attended any seminars or workshops?

Cyanide Mishka: No, my only teachers have been close friends. I learn from watching them and from experimenting.

FETFAN: How would you best describe yourself using just 3 words?

Cyanide Mishka: Pervy, cuddly and misanthropic Smile

FETFAN: As an artist I'm sure there are many art forms you enjoy photographing. Can you share which ones you enjoy the most.

Cyanide Mishka: Emotive nude art.

FETFAN: Have you ever found an interest in Fetish Photography, and if so please share your favorite experience.

Cyanide Mishka: I love symbolism and layers in fetish photography. What can seem like just a disgusting fucked-up photo to someone has tons of meaning to another. When you can feel the longing, the extremity, the pain or the bliss, that is my favorite. Documenting such states of mind is beyond exciting to me.

FETFAN: What photographic ambition have you not achieved yet?

Cyanide Mishka: Being an actual photographer for a start would be nice Smile In other words, I'd like to study photography and film-making.

FETFAN: What advice would you give to someone who is considering a photography career?

Cyanide Mishka: I don't have a career in photography and can't give any professional advise. What works for me is just following my passion no matter what people think or what I earn or if I have a career. When photography starts being a boring everyday job, it's not art from the soul anymore.

FETFAN: To your fans and followers any last words?

Cyanide Mishka: Explore your mind, look deeper than the surface and do what makes you happy. And to my lovely perverts out there - practise only consensual violence.
